The green transformation we are witnessing and supporting with our solutions is also happening in the maritime market. Shipyards producing recreational boats and catamarans are the first to offer zero-emission hydrogen-powered boats, which are essentially quiet vessels that do not emit exhaust fumes, noise or other pollutants. Now yacht users can enjoy the beauty of the seas and oceans with the feeling that they are not harming the environment they enjoy.
French company EODev (Energy Observer Developments), in cooperation with Eneria, has launched an innovative hydrogen-powered electricity generator called REXH2. The REXH2 unit is the result of ongoing research and development by EODev and Toyota. The generator is perfectly suited to the extreme conditions of the marine environment, reaching 80 kW. The launch of the first hydrogen-powered generator took place on a self-powered boat Energey Observer in France in 2017. The REXH2 hydrogen unit has undergone many tests aboard boats in harsh weather conditions and sailed to the Arctic Circle in 2019, confirming not only its robustness but also its performance in severely demanding sea conditions.
After completing the Atlantic crossing, the next step in the development of environment-friendly marine solutions and the result of EODev’s cooperation with Hanova Yachts shipyard was the installation of the device on a Hanova 40 prototype boat.
The Hanova 40 is the first 12-meter recreational boat equipped with a REXH2 marine generator, emission-free, quiet and with hydrogen-electric hybrid technology, intended for mass production.
The electricity generated on board the Hynova 40 by the REXH2 fuel cell is used directly to power the boat’s propulsion chain via an electric motor and is stored in batteries, so it can also be used to power auxiliary drive.
In addition to its very high energy density, hydrogen has two advantages: it is the most common molecule in the universe and its combustion releases only water, oxygen and heat, which can easily be reused.
Enabling the industrialisation of hydrogen solutions developed by engineers using Toyota’s fuel cell technology is now EODev’s main goal, both as an incubator and as an accelerator for the expansion of hydrogen proponents.
REXH2 is a modular solution developed with Toyota’s latest generation of fuel cells, enabling marine and river mobility without CO2 emissions, fine particulate matter or noise. Its tailor-made application provides propulsion and operation of onboard systems using hydrogen.
The hydrogen solutions developed by EODev have many advantages over traditional installations, particularly diesel, but also “all-electric” ones. In addition to environmental goals, the size of the REXH2 unit allows for total modularity to optimise the response to energy needs, with reduced size and weight, and rapid fuelling of the tank. The lack of moving parts in the fuel cell guarantees simplified and predictable maintenance for at least 10,000 hours. Finally, because REXH2 is a plug-and-play solution, you don’t need to be a hydrogen engineer to operate the boat.
As in modern cars, the system is “connected” and the data of all components are traceable and archived remotely. The development of zero-emission, zero-noise technologies for private maritime mobility is a great opportunity to help accelerate the emergence of hydrogen society.
Moreover, the consumption of several hundred kilograms of hydrogen per day promotes the multiplication of hydrogen distribution and collection points, making these solutions accessible to as many people as possible.
EOdev’s goal is to gradually integrate the device into different types of vessels, from recreational yachts to professional boats and passenger ships, in full compliance with environmental regulations.
Eneria, together with its business partner EOdev, is convinced that boats powered by REXH2 marine units are the forerunners of “tomorrow’s” recreational boating and maritime mobility in harmony with the marine environment.
Eneria assembles all hydrogen power generators at its own manufacturing facility in France, tests them, and is responsible for distribution, sales, commissioning, warranty and service.
In addition, REXH2 power units can operate in the hybrid mode with other generation units offered by Eneria CAT.
REXH2’s solutions provide environmentally conscious shipowners with boat access to protected natural areas.
