The history of district heating systems in Nowy Targ was inseparably linked to the combustion of solid fuels for decades. Combined with the city’s geographical location in a basin, this created a major environmental challenge. According to air quality measurements from 2020, Nowy Targ experienced significant exceedances of air pollution standards, particularly during the winter season. In response to these challenges and with the health of residents in mind, the Municipal District Heating Company (MPEC) made a strategic decision in 2021 to gradually move away from conventional coal-based heating methods. The chosen solution was high-efficiency cogeneration, an innovative process based on advanced gas engines that simultaneously generate electricity and heat within a single technological cycle, significantly outperforming traditional heating plants.
Due to the substantial costs associated with such a project, MPEC Nowy Targ was unable to finance it solely from its own budget. The company successfully obtained external financial support from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under the “County Heating Systems” priority program. This support consisted of two components:
This significant capital injection paved the way for the complete modernization and environmental transformation of the city’s heat production system.
Following a tender procedure, Eneria was selected to deliver, install, and commission the new cogeneration units. The primary objective of the project was to create an efficient, decentralized system composed of four independent natural gas-powered units. Eneria supplied premium generator sets based on CAT CG170-12 engines. The combined electrical output of the entire system is nearly 4 MW. The system was integrated into the municipal network at four strategic locations:
The implementation of such advanced infrastructure required extensive engineering effort and an individual approach to each of the four locations. Every site presented unique technical, spatial, and operational requirements that had to be addressed during the design and installation phases. The objective was not only to achieve high efficiency but also to ensure seamless integration with the existing district heating infrastructure.
The distributed nature of the cogeneration system provides increased flexibility, reliability, and energy security. By placing generation units at multiple locations throughout the city, the system can respond more effectively to local demand while minimizing transmission losses and improving overall operational efficiency.
The transition from coal-based heating to high-efficiency gas-powered cogeneration represents a major step toward improving air quality in Nowy Targ. Reducing emissions from heat production directly contributes to lower levels of particulate matter and other pollutants that have historically affected the city, particularly during winter months.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project provides economic and operational advantages. Cogeneration enables the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, maximizing fuel utilization and increasing overall efficiency compared to conventional systems. This translates into lower operating costs and more sustainable energy management for the municipality.
The modernization of the district heating system demonstrates how effective cooperation between local utilities, public funding institutions, and technology providers can drive meaningful environmental change. By securing external financing and implementing advanced cogeneration technology, Nowy Targ has taken a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
