The European Green Deal<\/strong> aimed at achieving climate neutrality by EU countries can be an opportunity for the development of the Polish rural areas. All that is needed for their residents is to embrace the technologies that are to be the foundation for this transition.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Green Deal \u2013 principles<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Europe intends to decarbonise on a massive scale. Brussels has set an ambitious goal – to make the European Union climate-neutral by 2050, in just 30 years. This means that its net emissivity is expected to be zero. This target applies to the EU as a whole, meaning that all its member states must intensively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

For Poland, the policy means first and foremost the need to move away from coal in the power industry. This will be a major challenge and problem for the mining sector, among others. But every difficulty is an opportunity in disguise – for other industries can benefit from the transition.\u00a0For example, The Green Deal<\/strong> can propel Polish agriculture.<\/p>\n

An extensive energy transition will require the construction of new capacity in the low- and zero-carbon energy industry. In this area, the countryside appears as a natural reservoir of resources for building significant capacity in the bioenergy industry and photovoltaics.<\/p>\n

PGNiG is planning changes related to the Green Deal<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Poland’s largest gas company, PGNiG, has already announced extensive plans to develop its agricultural biogas segment, with plans to acquire up to 8 billion cubic meters of this raw material. This will mean building an entire network of biogas plants and aggregating huge amounts of biomass. For farmers, this is an opportunity to sell production waste and develop energy crops.<\/p>\n

In turn, when it comes to photovoltaics<\/a>, its attractiveness was highlighted by the M\u00f3j Pr\u0105d [My Electricity<\/em>] programme. By granting relatively small subsidies – up to PLN 5,000\u00a0 – it triggered investment leverage that has expanded Poland’s solar power park. Currently, its installed capacity exceeds 4 GW. In contrast, the plans outlined in Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040 assume the construction of as much as 16 GW in solar PV. In this regard, the rural areas can provide significant acreage of wasteland or agricultural land of the lowest classes, which can be covered with photovoltaic panels. For rural residents, this is an opportunity not only for extra money but also for lower electricity bills.<\/p>\n
