Uptime Institute is a respected organisation dedicated to providing professional consulting services and specialising in data centre issues. The main focus of Uptime Insititute’s activities is to effectively improve the efficiency and security of specialised Data Centres. What certifications does the Uptime Institute issue? Why are they very important in the IT industry and which CAT products can boast having UI certification? In this article, we will try to answer these questions!<\/p>\n

What is Uptime Institute certification?<\/h2>\n

The Uptime Institute’s work focuses on certifying server rooms, whose security and proper infrastructure are very important because of the data stored. The classification used by the Uptime Institute consists of four TIERS: TIER I, TIER II, TIER III, and TIER IV. This classification system allows UI to evaluate data centres in terms of reliability, availability and performance. TIER Uptime Institute certification allows clients to assess whether a data centre will indeed be able to meet their daily needs. It is worth noting that Uptime Institute is an independent organisation, so the criteria to assign specific TIERs to data centres are neutral and objective.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Uptime Institute certification is conducted at several stages of data centre creation. Stage one is the certification of project documents. It is a solution that can provide decision-making support for those who need an independent assessment of a future data centre project. Uptime Institute experts carefully analyse the documentation provided and offer advisory assistance. Stage two is to certify a facility that has already been built. This process allows the site to be evaluated in the context of previous design plans. Stage three involves a thorough evaluation of the operational process itself.<\/p>\n

It is also worth noting that the TIER classification is also used by other institutions, so when encountering this designation, it is essential to check which organisation decided to issue the certificate. This is because the institutions use their own standards and requirements that the Data Centre must meet in order to receive the desired certification.<\/p>\n

What are the characteristics of CAT’s products certified by Uptime Institute?<\/h2>\n

Mobile generators, like specialised stationary generators, are energy security solutions that are able to provide access to power in the event of an outage or interruption of supply. In some cases, even a short period when power is not available can lead to very high losses, which is why generators have always been a popular solution used for emergency power.<\/p>\n

CAT\u00ae<\/sup> was the first manufacturer to conduct tests with the Uptime Institute at Data Centre facilities to which it supplied power generators. The result of the analyses in cooperation with UI is the development of a dedicated operating mode for the units, which fully meets the certification Tier III and IV<\/strong> requirements (Mission Critical Standby)<\/strong>. Operation of Mission Critical Standby units allows for \u00a0100 percent<\/strong> load with no limit on operating hours. This ensures investors’ full use of generators <\/strong>whose operation is optimised for the needs of Data Centre facilities.<\/p>\n

Lack of power in a Data Centre is a major problem, even if the power outage is very short. Therefore, adapting a suitable generator that meets all standards is the basis of energy security.\u00a0Mission Critical’s power generators <\/strong>are capable of operating for 24 hours under 100 percent load, which determines their functionality and suitability in TIER III and TIER IV data centres.<\/p>\n

TO SUM UP: The TIER Uptime Institute certification addresses the performance, reliability and availability of Data Centres. In TIER III and IV certified Data Centres, in accordance with the requirements of the Uptime Institute, CAT\u00ae<\/sup>Mission Critical Standby units can be used successfully as reliable protection for the facility in case of power outages from the grid or in case of grid failure.<\/p>\n
