This article is intended to help distinguish these devices from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Recent months have brought a real boom in terms of solar energy in Poland. Thanks to extensive government support programmes, thousands of people have decided to equip their roofs with devices that make it possible to produce energy from the Sun, i.e. PV panels and solar collectors. While these installations are similar in appearance, they are used to generate different types of energy.<\/p>\n<p>PV panels are built of, among others, silicon solar cells which enable the production of electricity from the Sun. This is achieved through the reaction of the silicon to the incident photons that make up solar radiation. This process sets electrons in motion, allowing them to be channelled in the form of an energy flow. There are three types of panels available on the market: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and amorphous.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, solar collectors are installations that convert the energy of the Sun into heat. There are several variants of this device, including flat-plate, vacuum, evacuated tube and concentrating collectors, with the first two types being the most popular. Solar collectors are designed to absorb solar radiation and convert this energy into heat, which is then directed to the home heating system and used for domestic water or, less commonly, individual rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The operation of both panels and collectors depends on the amount of available solar energy, which is why their efficiency throughout the year in Poland is not constant. The optimal period for these devices is from March to October. Weather factors, especially cloud cover, are also important. In the case of solar collectors, there is an additional variable affecting their work, namely the outdoor temperature.<\/p>\n<p>The placement of both panels and collectors plays a major role in the production of energy by these devices. To optimise this process, they should face south.<\/p>\n<p>The two types of installations are not mutually exclusive \u2013 both panels and collectors can be installed in the same building. The appropriate selection of these devices requires the support of an expert. First, it is necessary to properly determine the energy needs of a given house and then use this information to choose the right size and capacity of the solar units.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to mention that thanks to the annual settlement with a power distribution company, an investment in PV panels allows for the excess electricity produced in summer to be collected in winter, with a deduction of 20% (in installations of up to 10 kWp) or 30% (in systems with capacity of 10\u201150 kWp). However, this is not the case with solar collectors \u2013 surplus thermal energy cannot be collected in winter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6209\" src=\"https:\/\/eneria.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/R\u00f3\u017cnice-w-modu\u0142ach-e1579866516615.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The production of energy from the Sun is becoming increasingly popular \u2013 this solution is supported not only by the government, but also by banks, which offer preferential loans for this type of equipment.
